We recently embarked on a rewarding journey with the Nuxalk Nation to empower the community to connect with their deep culture and language through a modern digital medium.
Led by Laaqymays and the Nuxalk Nation and supported by cross-team collaboration from Microsoft, Flip and the Airband Initiative, we supported the development of more than 100 short videos regarding Stl’mstaliwa, a term that translates roughly in English to “The Full Human Experience”.
These videos make traditional Nuxalk knowledge accessible to the people of the Nuxalk Nation.”

Nuxalk, Kitasoo Xai’xais guardians appointed with park ranger authority
The Kitasoo Xai’xais and Nuxalk First Nations, along with BC Parks, have launched a new pilot program that designates 11 Indigenous guardians with the same legal authorities as park rangers within the parks and protected areas in their ancestral territories.
Guardians Receive Park Ranger Badges — ‘A Modern Link to Ancestral Responsibilities’
Guardians from two Coastal First Nations, the Kitasoo Xai’Xais Nation and the Nuxalk Nation, received park ranger badges and associated legal powers from BC Parks last week. The achievement — a power-sharing agreement born from decades of hard work, relationship-building and training — is the first-of-its-kind in B.C. and Canada.
